Therapy varies depending upon the type of therapy  received. The first session is often an assessment where the I will  gather information about your background, physical health, supportive relationships, current concerns, and goals for therapy. This helps the me understand your unique situation and create a personalized treatment plan. 


Therapy provides a confidential and non-judgmental space for you to express your thoughts and feelings. I'm bound by ethical guidelines to protect your privacy. While your information will be private I'm a mandated reporter which means I have to report any abuse or a client's intention to harm themselves or someone else. In some circumstances a court order may ask for some information however; there are limitations on what I can disclose. 


If your child is not at risk for harm it would be best to wait until they are open to coming to therapy for the best benefit. 

  • Forcing them to attend may give them the impression that therapy is a punishment.
  • Oftentimes when individuals feel forced to come to therapy they are not genuine in their interactions, are reluctant to share/participate and don't receive the benefits of therapy. This is commonly due to their outlook about it and feeling like they have no power.
  • Many parents are great about being on top of getting their children therapy right away after a significant event in their life ( death, divorce, moving) but they may need a little bit of time to wrap their minds around the incident before talking about it with someone.  
  •  As mentioned earlier if you feel your child may be at risk for harm they should have immediate attention through 911 or your local emergency room. 


Therapists often use evidence-based techniques and interventions tailored to your needs. These can include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), talk therapy, mindfulness, and more. Any of these techniques can help you work through your concerns and of course ask your therapist about any questions you may have. 


Therapy encourages self-exploration and self-awareness. You may explore your past, present challenges, and potential solutions. It is important for you to be honest in therapy because that is how you will gain the most from the experience. In some situations, you may also be given homework assignments or exercises to practice outside of sessions. These reinforce what you learn in therapy and help you apply new skills in real-life situations. 


The duration of therapy varies widely. Some people may attend only a few sessions to address a specific issue, while others may engage in longer-term therapy for more complex concerns. Therapy session times can vary between 45 minutes up to 90 minutes however; 50 minutes to 60 minutes is more common. 


There are many benefits to therapy but to name some: a neutral person to listen to your concerns, gaining coping strategies,  emotional release,  validation, support, healthier relationships and empowerment. You'll gain the most benefit from therapy the more you are willing to share your thoughts, history and circumstances. This allows your therapist to provide the most effective interventions for you.


The length of time it takes to see results from counseling sessions with me varies depending on the individual and the issues being addressed. Some clients may see improvements after just a few sessions, while others may require longer-term therapy or other services and support from outside providers for best results. It must be kept in mind that many of the underlying concerns did not happen overnight. It is only fair to you not to place unrealistic expectations on yourself. You will have moments with great gains and other times where you may miss the mark. It's okay, as long as you're progressing.
